When it comes to thigh stretches and strengtheners, one pose (or actually a sequence) that does the job is Utthita Hasta Padangusthasana or Extended hand to big toe pose. It’s a superset for building awesome strength and flexibility in quads and hamstrings. It is practiced in Ashtanga Yoga primary series.

Drishti is very important. Gaze forward in the first phase, gazing at side (parsva drishti) in second phase and forward in the third phase.

Ground matters a lot when doing it outside, even a minor slope makes balance much harder.

My best tips here is to warm up with forward folds and heron pose, to open up hamstrings. And do the full ashtanga yoga sequence for this one to get most out of this asana.
